Due to an executive order by President Biden and an extension by the administration, Utahns will have access to a Special Open Enrollment Period from February 15th to August 15th in 2021. (If you’re not familiar with how enrollment periods work, here’s a quick overview.)
The administration determined that the COVID-19 situation presents unique challenges for consumers in accessing and maintaining health insurance. The goal of this Special Open Enrollment Period is to make it easier for Americans to enroll in Marketplace coverage and take advantage of the expanded premium tax credits from the American Rescue Plan.
If you are a Utahn, here’s what this means for you.
First, if you missed Utah’s recent annual Open Enrollment Period that ended December 15, 2020, this is a second opportunity for you to purchase 2021 health insurance coverage with no questions asked. You do not need to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period based on a recent life event.
Second, if you experience a life event during this time, enrolling in new health insurance will be easier for you. Normally, you would need to submit proof of your life event to the Marketplace to secure coverage. If you enroll during this Special Open Enrollment Period, you will not be required to submit any proof. That’s one less thing for you to worry about.
Third, if you purchased coverage in the recent annual Open Enrollment Period and you’re unhappy with it, this is an opportunity for you to switch plans mid-year. If you’re considering this, keep in mind that a change to year coverage mid-year will reset your annual deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.
